Elliott Claims "Jump Start" Win @ Webster City

The Hamilton County Speedway in Webster City hosted another night of racing action on the big half-mile Saturday night, August 8th. By my count seventy-five cars were checked in, including seventeen IMCA late models and IMCA sportmods each. The heat races provided a scary moment when Jason Wagoner's car went up in a ball of flames down the backstretch before coming to a stop on the frontstretch. Jason would walk away uninjured and climb in his brother Tony's car for the feature later on in the program.

Five IMCA sport compacts kicked off feature action with Angie Webb taking control on the first lap. That lead did not last long, however, as Justin Wacha made the pass on lap two and went on to take the win. Webb was second, Daniel Ayers third, Gary Carlson fourth, and I believe Neil Nabholz rounded out the field.

Thirteen IMCA hobby stocks took their turn on the tacky track, but things got off to a rocky start as Steve Brannick and Matt Ring got tangled up with Brannick plastering the outside wall hard in turn two. Both drivers were okay and retired from the race. Ryan Caquelin would hold the top spot at the completion of the first lap, but points leader Justin Ades was on the move as he climbed into the second spot after passing Sid Larson on the low side. Larson would continue to slide back as Kevin Schmauss made his way by two laps later while Ades closed in on Caquelin for the lead.

Towards the middle of the pack, Craig Graham was slowly advancing forward as he ducked low to complete a pass on Sid Larson for fourth on lap eight. Caquelin appeared to have the preferred line, but changed his lane just enough exiting turn four that opened the door for Ades to sneak by on the outside to grab the lead at the white flag. From that point on, Caquelin could never regroup as Justin Ades went home with the win. Ryan Caquelin settled for second, Kevin Schmauss third, Sid Larson fourth, and Craig Graham lost a spot at the end thanks to a flat tire to limp home in fifth.

Dave Hubbard used the outside front row starting spot to take control of the stock car feature from the onset. Most of the race saw single file racing on the top side, although Curt Hook and Mark Elliott did attempt to pass using the low groove once in awhile. Elliott would suffer a flat tire late in the race to end his hopes of winning while Hook's car got a little lose on the exit of turn four coming to the checkers to allow Scott Bloemke to get by for fifth. But the night belonged to Dave Hubbard as he kept the rest of the field behind him for fifteen laps. Adam Silvey finished second, Jeremy Ades third, Mike Weimann fourth, and Scott Bloemke fifth.

Sixteen of the seventeen IMCA sportmods made their way to the track next for their main event. Pole sitter Dustin West led the first couple of laps while Rocky Caudle moved into second place with a pass on George Gilliland on the low side. The low side didn't work well for the stock cars, but the sportmods were able to run side by side throughout the race as Sutherland would also slip by Gilliland on the bottom groove. Caudle would dethrone West as the race leader on lap four as Kevin Sather put his name in the hat. Sather raced to the fourth position on lap four and quickly passed two more cars the next lap to take over the runner up spot. Kyle Brown would slide under West to take the third spot away at the halfway point as Sather quickly closed in on Caudle for the lead.

A caution bunched the field together and Sather took advantage when Caudle went low on the first corner. Sather powered his machine to the outside to take the lead away. Sather would push up a lap later in turn two, opening the door for Caudle to reclaim the top spot. Kevin Sather would continue to run on the cushion and once again motor by Caudle on the top to snare the lead back and take home the hard-earned win. Rocky Caudle finished second, Matt Lettow third, Kyle Brown fourth, and Dustin West rounded out the top five.

A field of ten IMCA modifieds were set for their feature race. Mark Elliott would need to be push started before the race, so therefore he was sent to the tail of the field. Keith Pittman garnered the top spot on lap one, but Elliott had already passed half the field to move into fourth by lap two. Elliott used the slingshot move off turn two to motor by Derek Oberle, a car I believe Elliott used to drive. A caution came out on lap three, and Elliott ducked low on Greg Cox to secure the runner up spot. By lap five, Pittman would relinquish the lead to Elliott after Elliott powered by on the low side off turn four. From that point on Mark Elliott would extend his lead to more then a straight away when the checkers waved. Keith Pittman came home second, Greg Cox third, Shane Demay fourth, and Jim Hoyle rounded out the top five.

The final event of the night would be the IMCA late model twenty-five lap main event. Veteran racer Jeff French took command of the race with Jason Hahne right in his tire tracks. Following an early caution, Ryan Griffith made a big move that propelled him past Shawn Essex and Clint Wendel to move into the third spot before another caution quickly waved. Things quickly heated up around the fifth place cars as Todd Cooney drove by Ben Nading for fourth and Darrel DeFrance got by Clint Wendel on the low side behind them. Lap eight saw Cooney dive to the inside of Griffith to claim the third spot before another caution waved.

Jason Hahne got a great jump on Jeff French to take the lead on the restart on lap eight. Darrel DeFrance slipped by Griffith on the inside a lap later to take over fourth as another yellow flag was displayed. Cooney raced to the inside of French for the runner up spot and while Griffith followed suit to third. Cooney would close the gap to Hahne while French lost two spots when DeFrance and Al Johnson zoomed past. The final caution waved with five laps to go, but Jason Hahne was able to keep Todd Cooney behind him on his way to victory lane. Cooney was second, Ryan Griffith third, Darrel DeFrance fourth, and Al Johnson rebounded nicely to fifth after being involved in the first altercation early in the race.

All results are unofficial as I saw them cross the line or drop out.

Races were completed just before 10pm. Despite the heavy rain Friday night and into early Saturday morning, I thought the track stayed in decent shape. There were some soft spots and the majority of the cars used the high line, but the sportmods and late models were able to use the bottom side late in the program. Hopefully the track can figure out a way to attract more cars and fans as both were lacking a bit on this night.

- Racing may be a hobby, but it's DEFINITELY addictive!!
